A. Classification and Structure of Amines Definition: Amines are organic compounds derived from ammonia (NH₃) by replacing one or more hydrogen atoms with alkyl or aryl groups. They are classified as primary (1°), secondary (2°), or tertiary (3°) based on the number of alkyl/aryl groups attached to the nitrogen atom. Explanation: Amines are nitrogen-containing organic compounds where the nitrogen atom has a lone pair of electrons, making them basic and nucleophilic. Primary amines have one alkyl group attached to nitrogen (R-NH₂), secondary amines have two (R₂NH), and tertiary amines have three (R₃N). The nitrogen atom in amines is sp³ hybridized, giving them a pyramidal shape similar to ammonia. The presence of the lone pair on nitrogen is crucial for their chemical behavior, allowing them to act as bases by accepting protons and as nucleophiles by donating electron pairs to electrophiles.
