About A/L Chemistry: A/L Chemistry covers physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry across two years.

A. s-Block Elements: Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals Definition: Elements in groups 1 and 2 of the periodic table where the last electron enters the s-orbital, characterized by low ionization energies and strong metallic properties. Explanation: s-block elements include alkali metals (Group 1: Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr) and alkaline earth metals (Group 2: Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra). These elements have one or two electrons in their outermost s-orbital which they readily lose to form cations with noble gas configurations. They are highly reactive metals with low densities, low melting points, and strong reducing abilities. Their reactivity increases down the group due to decreasing ionization energy and increasing atomic size. These elements form ionic compounds and show characteristic flame colors due to electron transitions when heated. Think of it as: Think of s-block elements as eager volunteers who are always ready to give away their outermost electrons to achieve stability, like people who quickly donate their spare change to reach a perfect round number.
