A. Understanding Functions
Definition: A function is a special type of relation where each element in the domain (input set) is mapped to exactly one element in the codomain (output set). Explanation: Imagine a machine where you put in an input, and it always gives you a specific, single output. This machine represents a function. For every 'x' value you put in, there is only one 'y' value that comes out. If an input could lead to multiple different outputs, it would just be a relation, not a function. This uniqueness of output is the defining characteristic of a function. Think of it as: Think of a vending machine. When you press a specific button (input), you always get the same item (output). You wouldn't expect to press the 'Coke' button and sometimes get a Coke, sometimes a Sprite, or sometimes both. Each input has one unique output. Real-world application: Functions are used everywhere in science and engineering. For example, the relationship between the time an object has been falling and its speed can be described by a function.
