About A/L Combined Mathematics: Combined Mathematics consists of Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics across two years.
- Net moment (torque) is zero: ΣM = 0 about any point. Example: Consider a uniform rod of length L and weight W resting horizontally on two supports A and B. If support A is at one end and support B is at L/2 from A, and a load P is placed at 3L/4 from A. To find the reactions at A and B:
- Vertical equilibrium: RA + RB = W + P
- Moment about A: (W * L/2) + (P * 3L/4) - (RB * L/2) = 0
- RA + RB = 10 + 5 = 15 N
- (10 * 2) + (5 * 3) - (RB * 2) = 0 => 20 + 15 - 2RB = 0 => 35 = 2RB => RB = 17.5 N
